Falling asleep

During the sleep stage, our body begins to slow down and becomes somehow paralyzed, so we did not move too much during sleep. During this transition period, the brain switches off the different business centers, one by one.

Dream and nightmare

The dreams are more likely to occur during periods of REM sleep, but not only. Having the wandering mind may be an attempt of the brain to activate our memories and keep them fresh in our memory.

This may also explain why we hallucinate when we are sleep deprived. Without the ability to reorganize our memories during sleep, it is often difficult to distinguish between dream and reality.

Nightmares also occur most often during REM sleep.

Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking is more likely to occur in a person awake or in transition from deep sleep and lighter sleep.

Being sleepwalking is linked to genetics. People who have a parent or sibling who is sleepwalking are ten times more likely to be so than others. These people do not generally remember their episodes.

Sleep also helps consolidate memory elapsed day. It is also advisable to sleep when such studies. A good night’s sleep so helps boost memory, but also helps regulate mood.
